Congratulations Graduates!
More than 2,000 bright, optimistic and motivated graduates turned the page to a new chapter of their lives Saturday when they received their degrees at Old Dominion University's 112th Commencement ceremonies.
It was a warm and spectacularly sunny day for the procession across campus, where students took part in the time-honored tradition of walking across the university seal on Kaufman Mall on their way to the Ted Constant Convocation Center for the ceremony.
As I shook the hands of the graduates coming across the stage, I watched a variety of emotions flicker on their faces - happiness, nervousness, excitement, trepidation and sheer giddiness. The one thing they all possessed, though, was pride. And rightfully so!
Speakers Klaus Scharioth, German ambassador to the United States, and CNN correspondent Alina Cho reminded graduates of their responsibility to make a difference in the world. We also awarded honorary degrees to two individuals whose work has made a significant impact - Columbia law professor and legal system critic Patricia J. Williams and ODU alumna Elizabeth Duke, who is a member of the Federal Reserve Board.
Congratulations to all of our graduates and their families! Your dedication and achievement is to be lauded. Go out, make your mark and show your Monarch pride!
