Memorial Day Is a Reminder That Freedom Is Not Free
Memorial Day weekend signals the start of summer, backyard barbeques, beach vacations and, generally, a more relaxed attitude. But as we head into this long weekend, we should remember the real reason we pause and reflect on the last Monday in May - the men and women of the United States military who have given their lives in defense of our freedom.
At Old Dominion University, nearly one-quarter of our campus community is affiliated with the military - as active duty, reservists, retired or dependents. Being located in military-rich Hampton Roads has provided our university with many opportunities and an obligation to serve those that serve our country.
ODU's relationship with the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines dates back to World War II and has continued to grow and flourish over the years. In addition to sizeable Army and Navy ROTC programs on campus, our military partnerships extend to unique degree programs for active duty members, research collaborations with local and national commands, thought-provoking symposia on geo-political issues, and more.
As you plan your activities for the holiday weekend, I urge you to visit Old Dominion's War Memorial plaque in front of Webb University Center on Kaufman Mall and say a quiet thank you to the 37 alumni and students remembered there. Their sacrifice is a sober reminder that freedom is never free.
