ODU and Hampton Roads -- On Course for a Brighter Future

Literary critic John Churton Collins said, "In prosperity, our friends know us. In adversity, we know our friends."

When I jotted that quote some weeks ago while drafting my State of the University address, I had no idea how prophetic it would be. Yesterday, as I looked over the crowd gathered for the address, I saw many, many friends of Old Dominion University.

In addition to our dedicated and respected faculty, staff and members of the Board of Visitors, the more than 1,000 attendees included a number of Hampton Roads' General Assembly delegates, mayors, vice mayors, city council members, city managers, school superintendents and board members, and numerous civic, business and community leaders. Old Dominion University is a thriving institution, in large part because of their friendship and support.

With our 2009-2014 Strategic Plan, we have charted a course for Old Dominion to become one of the nation's preeminent metropolitan research universities. Two major components of that effort are for ODU to build even stronger civic and community partnerships and to invest strategically to spur the region's economic growth. We want to contribute positively to all aspects of life in Hampton Roads.

Yesterday's attendance signals that we are on the right course. I am excited about the possibilities and look forward to working together to realize an even brighter future for Old Dominion University and Hampton Roads.
