Remembering 9/11

Tomorrow we mark the 9th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Communities across the country will hold vigils to remember the tragic events and victims of that day. Firefighters, police officers and other first responders will honor the heroic actions of their colleagues. Military members and families will visit loved ones, now resting in Arlington, who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In the Old Dominion University community, I ask each of you to memorialize the victims of 9/11 with a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center that day. During your reflection, please remember the members of our ODU family who lost their lives in the attacks: students Craig Amundson, Robert R. Elseth and Lt. Col. Karen J. Wagner, and alumnus Cmdr. Robert A. Schlegel.

As Sept. 11 has been declared a "National Day of Service and Remembrance," you may also want to join Old Dominion faculty, staff and students participating as a team in the "Out of Darkness Walk," tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., at Mt. Trashmore in Virginia Beach. You can sign up for the ODU team, sponsored by the Center for Service and Civic Engagement, at www.sos-walk.org/sos/.

In our thoughts and in our actions, we have the opportunity to keep alive the memory of the 9/11 victims and hope for a peaceful future.
