Veterans Deserve Our Gratitude

Tomorrow our nation will observe Veterans' Day.

On the Old Dominion University campus, Veterans' Day holds an even deeper meaning because of our proximity to so many military installations and because our student body, faculty and staff are composed of large numbers of military active duty, retirees and dependents.

Additionally, we should not lose sight of one of the reasons we at ODU are able to pursue our mission of education - because veterans have defended our nation's constitution and its democracy. We are free to ask questions, challenge the status quo, and discover new frontiers.

We will honor America's veterans with two events: our traditional Veterans' Day program at 12:30 p.m. on Kaufman Mall and a Veterans' Day Service Event co-sponsored by Blue Star Families and featuring Sen. Mark Warner. At the Service Event, participants will pack gift bags for military families with deployed service members from 10 a.m. to noon in Webb center.

I encourage the entire campus to support both events and to take the time to thank our veterans. They deserve our gratitude.
