Backstage Pass to Monarch Life

More than 325 prospective students and their families received a first-hand look at Old Dominion University's Idea Fusion community last Saturday.

Hosted by admissions, the Open House attracted students from Connecticut to Florida, who all came to learn more about life as a Monarch! And it's no wonder. With students from more than 100 countries and all 50 states, Old Dominion is a welcoming community and rich mix of cultures, viewpoints and life experiences.

Throughout the day, guests learned about our six colleges, career exploration, and the exceptional services we offer students to help them achieve their academic, personal and professional goals.

Student success is paramount at Old Dominion. We've added new faculty positions to ensure students have access to smaller classes and one-on-one opportunities with professors. We are incorporating new advising protocols; broadening an innovative math tutoring initiative; and increasing efforts to connect with students earlier in the semester, among other initiatives.

Outside of the classroom, programs like our Career Management Center help students obtain practical experience. Last year, Old Dominion students earned more than 6,400 credit hours and some $3.3 million in wages from co-ops, internships and employment related to their field of study.

I always enjoy speaking with our Open House visitors and learning more about their ambitions. Of course, I want each of them to achieve those goals here at Old Dominion and I feel confident that after visiting our campus their choice will be clear. But even in those cases where a student may be considering other options, meeting such inspiring and determined young people is a powerful reminder of why I serve and gives me great hope for the future.

Our next Open House is November 9. I hope to see you there!
