As the institutional research officer, Dr. Karim is responsible for all administrative aspects of research and its development at ODU. He oversees all university-wide research centers and support facilities. He interfaces tightly with the ODU Research Foundation in support of sponsored program activity. His staff in the Office provide basic support to the faculty for their regulatory, research development, grant writing,intellectual property and marketing needs. More

Dr. Heller, the renowned cancer researcher and pioneer in the use of electrogenetherapy, became Executive Director of the university's Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics and joined ODU's College of Health Sciences in July 2008. He oversees the Center's objectives, which are to perform leading edge interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research, recruit top faculty and exceptional graduate students, support regional, national and international programs, and to increase external funding and institutional visibility.

Before becoming Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center's Executive Director, Dr. John Sokolowski had been the Interim Executive Director since June 2009 and Director of Research since Fall 2006. He is credited with expanding the areas and amount of research being conducted at the center, and he is an author and co-editor of Principles of Modeling and Simulation - A Multidisciplinary Approach, the first multidisciplinary textbook in the MS&V field. More

Dr. Eck joined the Office of Research in October 2009. Her role includes working with faculty and staff to identify, facilitate, and support the formation of multi-investigator, multidisciplinary, inter-college, and inter-institutional research initiatives. Working with the five Grant Writers and a Research Coordinator, she assists faculty with the development of high quality grant proposals, identifying appropriate funding opportunities, interpreting grant program guidelines, facilitating team grant proposals, and delivering workshops on all aspects of grantsmanship and proposal development. She works with the Vice President for Research in managing intramural funding programs, representing ODU on regional research and education consortium, and liaising with federal and state funding bodies and corporate partners. Brent Edington

Brent joined the Office of Research in February 2012. Most recently, Brent served as director of business development and finance for JSK Therapeutics Inc., a virtual cancer drug development company. His experience includes more than nine years with the University of Utah's Technology Commercialization Office as well as five startup companies. Brent has a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in Molecular Genetics and postdoctoral research experience in plant genetics and gene expression at the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. He also earned an M.B.A. from the University of Colorado at Denver.

Tawana keeps the operation running from the "front end" by providing administrative support to the V.P. and facilitating logistics of Office operations. In addition, Tawana monitors the office budgets, tracks grant proposals with indirect cost commitments, and maintains the Vice President's calendar.

Adam joined the Office of Research in May 2006. He is the liaison to the University's research protocol review committees (human subjects, animal subjects, radiation safety, & biosafety). He ensures compliance with federal regulations governing research risks and he reviews research proposals for adherence to federal and internal procedures and guidelines. Adam also coordinates training and education regarding research ethics and professional development. His academic training is in developmental psychology and infant development.

Jackie joined the Office of Research in October 2007 and provides grant writing support to faculty in the Colleges of Arts & Letters and Business & Public Administration, as well as to University administration. Grant services include: analysis of solicitations and guidelines to clarify requirements; specific guidance in writing, together with templates, checklists and editing support; and coordination of grant teams and related resources. She also serves as a liaison between the colleges and the Office of Research in identifying funding opportunities and networking for collaborative research projects.

Melissa joined the Office of Research in April 2010 and provides grant writing support to the faculty in the Darden College of Education. She has a Bachelor's in Political Science and a Master's in Public Administration. Melissa comes to ODU from the non-profit sector. She has experience writing federal, state and foundation grants. Grant services include: preliminary analysis of grant solicitations and guidelines ; development of outlines to clarify proposal requirements; development of templates and checklists; specific guidance in writing and editing support; drafting and obtaining letters of support; review of proposal to assure required components and guidelines are addressed; coordination of grant teams and related resources. She also serves as a liaison between the College of Education and the Office of Research in identifying funding opportunities and networking for collaborative research projects.

 

Kathryn Simms, Ph.D., CPA

Kathryn joined the Office of Research in January 2012 as a grant writer for the College of Health Sciences. In this role, she collaborates mainly with Health Sciences faculty to facilitate the development of grant proposals. Her work ranges from editing nearly finalized grant proposals to assisting faculty in identifying funding sources and in building proposal development teams. Kathryn has previously been a COO/CFO of a regional healthcare corporation, a faculty member in the College of Business & Public Administration at Old Dominion University, and a research methodologist at Norfolk State University. She also has prior experience as a Principal Investigator and has published peer-reviewed studies in a variety of fields including business, health sciences, and education. She earned a PhD from the University of Georgia in 1996 and a PhD in education from Old Dominion University in 2010.

Stephen joined the Office of Research in December 2010. His primary work is to assist the College of Sciences' faculty members in developing competitive grant applications for all types of externally sponsored research activities, ranging from single-investigator projects to multi-disciplinary/multi-institutional collaborations.  Stephen has previously served as Associate Dean for Academic Research for the United States Military Academy at West Point, Research Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, and Program Officer at the National Science Foundation.  His doctorate degree is from Carnegie-Mellon University in nuclear physics.

Lisa joined the Office of Research in August 2010 and provides several services to ODU faculty which include: researching funding opportunities for individual faculty, finding funding opportunities for and compiling the weekly listservs, administering the four intramural funding programs, compiling the Office of Research Annual Research Report and serving as the Web Administrator for the Office of Research website. Lisa also conducts workshops for faculty on the Pivot funding database. She has both a Bachelor's and a Master's in Political Science and most recently worked in grants management at a healthcare foundation.

Kersten serves as the liaison officer to the University's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Institutional Biosafety Committee to ensure these types of research are in compliance with federal, state, and University guidelines. She assists with protocol reviews and post-approval monitoring, as well as coordinating the University's efforts to attain AAALAC accreditation. Kersten joined the Office of Research in April 2011 and has a Master's in Marine Science from the University of Southern Mississippi - Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. She has a wealth of experience in field and animal laboratory research as a former Marine Scientist and laboratory manager.

Reis joined the Office of Research in August 2011.  He manages ODU's technology disclosures that revolve around the areas of engineering, physics, chemistry, and computer science.  He oversees the patenting process required to protect the intellectual property generated by University Staff and Researchers in these departments.  Reis is a patent agent who has previously worked with Special Programs Examiners at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  He has also worked with a Federal Circuit Court Judge in the Eastern District of Virginia on patent and technical matters.  Reis holds a Bachelor's in Engineering from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and a Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond.
