SCIENCE EDUCATION MATTERS

Enhancing students' understandings of science content and the processes involved in its development are critical to the physical and economic well-being of all people. Furthermore, science educators play a key role in communicating the culture of science to the public and in turn, shape science by educating and influencing future generations of scientists. As such, the organization, content, and delivery of the courses below will focus on developing students' understandings of (a) scientific processes and content and (b) effective, research-based pedagogy suitable for diverse learners, including inquiry-based instructional strategies and tools.

COURSES

 

STEM 434/534 (Spring and Fall)
Developing Instructional Strategies PreK-6: Science
ODU Catalog Description:
Following a theory into practice philosophy, students explore, develop, and use instructional strategies, materials, technologies, and activities to promote children’s development of attitudes, behaviors, and concepts in science in grades PreK-6 in support of NSTA’s and ACEI’s national instructional standards and the Virginia Standards of Learning. Lecture 3 hours: 3 credits. Prerequisites: ECI 301 and 304

 

STEM 454/554 (Spring and Fall)

Developing Instructional Strategies for Teaching in the Middle/High School: Science
ODU Catalog Description:
Following a theory/research-into-practice philosophy, students explore, develop, and use instructional strategies, materials, technologies, and activities to promote the development of attitudes, behaviors, and concepts in science, grades 6-12, informed by national instructional standards and the Virginia Standards of Learning; 30 hours of teaching practicum required. 4 credits. Prerequisites: ECI 301, ECI 304, ESSE 413/513, admission to Teacher Education, and passing scores on Praxis I.

 

STEM 720/820 (Fall Semester)

STEM Education Foundations
ODU Catalog Description:
A multidisciplinary course designed to provide insights about the fundamental concepts and basis for STEM education programs. Standards for the school subjects of science, technology, engineering education, and mathematics literacy will be reviewed. A national and international review of policies, assessment results, workforce needs, and politics involved in STEM education will be made. Connections between these subjects will be explored.

 

TLCI 795/895 (On Demand - Minimum of 8 students)

TPC: Research Collaboration and Integration with STEM
Course Description:
This course assists learners in exploring ways to integrate their research agendas with STEM-related issues. Instruction will focus on providing students with STEM content and methodological understandings and awareness that will enable them to more effectively collaborate with STEM-related researchers. Course elements address national standards regarding instruction. Lecture 3 hours: 3 credits. Prerequisites: ECI 619 and ELS 732 or equivalent

TPC: Grant Writing
Course Description:
This three-hour class explores the process of grant writing in education. Selection of funding sources, proposal narrative development, budget development, working with grants and contracts offices, and post-award issues are highlighted. Lecture 3 hours: 3 credits. Prerequisites: ECI 619 and ELS 732 or equivalent
