Designing Field Research

Purpose

We will continue our discussion of audience and conducting field research. You will also have the opportunity to start planning your research.

Freewrite–Reflective Write

For fifteen minutes, write about the assumptions that you currently have about your chosen audience. Address the following issues:

• What do you know about this person or group in general?
• What do you know about their beliefs and values, in general?
• What do you know about their views on the topic or problem you are working on?
• What do you know about the views on their type of media or genre you plan to use to convey your message to them?

Use the remaining class time to start planning your research (see homework for November 1, 2008). Remember to start with your research questions.
