Paper Proposal & Activity

Purpose
By articulating a justification for your chosen text both to yourself and to the instructor, both audiences can learn whether you are making a wise and informed decision.

Instructions–Writing

Choose a single text that you want to analyze for your paper assignments (three short analysis papers and the final analysis).

After you have chosen this text, write a 250 word proposal in which you argue why this text will be appropriate for these assignments. As you write this proposal, consider...

  • what is the text?
  • what is the text about, at least from your current knowledge of the text?
  • why does this interest you? how is it relevant to you?
  • what will be the personal or professional benefits from analyzing this text?
  • what challenges do you anticipate from analyzing this text?

Submit your work prior to class (7 pm) in the body of an email addressed to the instructor.

Instructions–Thinking

First read the instructions for the short papers.

Then read Knoeller's article "Driving Home at Midnight in a Dense Fog: Using Metaphor to Explore Writing Processes." As you read Knoeller's text, think about how you might write a paper on his use of ethos and pathos, especially as these theories are articulated by Aristotle and Barthes.

Be prepared to contribute to the discussion.
