Week 14 Exercise: Visuals Across the Disciplines

Purpose

Using visuals to communicate with one's audience is seen as necessary in some disciplines and superfluous in others. Yet, the disparate disciplines have (or had) legitimate reasons for their stance on including visuals in their texts. This exercise gives you the opportunity to examine how visuals get used in your discipline.

Writing

After reading Doumont, Lupton & Miller, and Gossett et al. think about how the discipline you work most in uses visuals to communicate. Think about the texts that you have read for your classes in this discipline, think about the texts that you have been prompted to produce in these classes, and think about the texts that you have actually produced in this disciplinary workplace.

In a 250-400 word discussion, draw upon the readings for tonight's class to explain how your discipline values (or does not value) visual communication. Furthermore speculate about why you think your discipline has adopted this position. Support your answer by referring to illustrative texts from discipline and the theory from the readings.

Submit your work prior to class (7 pm) in the body of an email through Blackboard messages. Your work will receive a process evaluation.
