Week 15 Exercise: The Fuzziness of Intellectual Property

Purpose

Intellectual property (IP) laws sometimes seem like trying to place a square peg in a round hole–it never fits quite right for all situations. Often times the difference is based upon different disciplines. And even within the same discipline, laws and conventions for IP can vary depending upon the context. Using your knowledge or your discipline, you will have the opportunity to think about IP in context and get practice developing pedagogy (as you will need to do for the workshop).

Writing

Read Barthes, Howard, and Vega. Now adopt the role of a teacher in your discipline. You can be a teacher at any level (e.g., manager, high school teacher, composition instructor, Ph.D. professor) in any context (academic context, professional workshop). Based upon the context that you have chosen, explain how you would teach intellectual property to your students or attendees.

In a 250-500 word discussion...

  • explain your position and the context
  • outline a brief lesson plan describing how you would teach intellectual property
  • develop a brief justification for the pedagogy by responding to the readings

Submit your work prior to class (7 pm) in the body of an email through Blackboard messages. Your work will receive a process evaluation.
