Cyberculture & Reality

Purpose

Let us begin the course by examining some of the popular tropes about technology and seeing how they apply to our understanding and use of writing technologies.

Activity

We will begin this discussion by watching "The Second Renaissance I & II" from The Animatrix. As we watch these animated shorts , be prepared to answer the following questions:

• What arguments are being made about technology?
• From your experience and knowledge, which of these arguments are valid? or invalid? Why?
• Where have you seen similar arguments made in our cultural discussions?
• What influence do these tropes have on our understanding and use of digital writing technologies?

After we watch these shorts, you will have 10 minutes to answer these questions in a free-write; then we will discuss these issues as a class.
