CADlite is a great little CADD program offered as Freeware.  It is simple to use and will output a dxf file.  Latest version is 3.5.9 and is 1.5KB to download.  Download it at: http://www.cadstd.com/

Design Workshop LT:  is a robust 3D application that comes with a nifty tutorial (novices like me will need it!) but it is very useful.  The latest version is 1.8 and is …KB to download.  Download it at http://www.artifice.com/free/dw_lite.html

LIGHTGRID:  is a simple Demoware version of a program that offers the student the ability to pre-visualize lighting colors on a simple object.  It’s not freeware and you are more limited than Virtual Light Lab but it’s an alternative.  It’s 2.5KB to download.  Download it at: http://www.stageresearch.com/


AUDIO

Audacity -   http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ A very robust freeware program with ample tutorial package.

QLab: http://figure53.com/ - For the Macintosh enthusiast this is a remarkable sound cueing and sequencing program that was used recently in a production of Jamestown at ODU. It uses the core audio components in the Macintosh OS to do some truly remarkable things. Requires Mac OSX (Tiger).

dbPowerAMP:  is a very robust CD ripper and conversion utility offered as Freeware.  It’s small in size but very useful.  Latest version is Release 9a, and is 1.5KB.  Download it at: http://www.mp3-converter.com/dbpoweramp.htm


VIDEO

ARKAOS: http://www.arkaos.net/software/vj_description.php An amazing software that allows for real-time video effects and switching for multimedia presentations. It's not freeware ($300US) but for multimedia effects it's hard to beat!.

Sunbird: www.mozilla.org - From the same folks who gave us Firefox and Thunderbird, this calendar software is quite versatile.

CELTX: http://www.celtx.com/ - A truly amazing piece of script writing and organizing freeware (available in 20 different languages). It's an absolute must for most of my production students. Available for CELTX:WinXP, CELTX:MAC-OSX, CELTX:Linux.
