Prof. Thomas Chapman

I joined the Dept. of Political Science and Geography as an Assistant Professor in 2009. I earned my B.A. from Michigan State University, my M.A. at The University of Toledo, and my PhD at Florida State University. Before coming to ODU, I was an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Geology and Geography at Georgia Southern University.

I am a social and cultural geographer. My research interests revolve around the geographical aspects of human identity, particularly the political economies of sexuality and space.

I also have a keen interest in community GIS and the social constructions of geo-technologies. My current research examines the socio-dynamics of using GIS to visualize the relationship between standards of learning (SOL) testing in Virginia public schools and neighorhood socio-demographics.

In the 2012-2013 academic year, I will teach GEOG 495, Geographies of Sexuality; GEOG 408, Cartography; GEOG 300, Maps and Geographic Information: and GEOG 100, Cultural Geography.
