Dr. Yonghee Suh, Assistant Professor

Yonghee Suh is an assistant professor of Social Studies/History Education at Old Dominion University. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Seoul National University in South Korea in 1994 and 1998, respectively.  She received a Ph.D. degree in Curriculum, Teaching and Educational Policy from Michigan State University in 2006.

Dr. Suh has two lines of research.  First, as a former middle school teacher who was interested in using the arts to teach Social Studies, she is examining various ways in which Social Studies teachers use the arts.  Building on her dissertation, she aims to identify knowledge and skills that teachers need in order to use the arts effectively as well as challenges that these teachers encounter.

Secondly, she is engaged in a research project, A History War:  Textbook Controversy and History Curriculum Change in East Asian countries.  With the collaboration of colleagues from Japan and China, she is conducting a research study to examine curriculum as well as historical understanding of students in China, Japan, and South Korea about World War II.  Her work has been published in venues such as Theory and Research in Social Education, International Journal of Social Education and International Review of History Education.

Dr. Suh is currently serving as an editorial board member for Social Studies Research and Practice, Curriculum History and Yearbook of National Reading Conference.
