Peer
Reading of Employment Documents
[syllabus]
[calendar]

The purpose of today's
activity is give you an opportunity to get feedack from your peers about
about the best strategies for revising your resume and cover letter.

Before
Class
- Bring two hard
copies of a resume with an accompanying cover letter (one draft is for
the instructor and the other draft is for your peer)
During
Class
- Exchange copies
of your cover letter and resume with one person in the class.
- Read over these
documents paying close attention to how well the writer presents her/himself
as a qualified applicant? how well the writer uses these documents to
convey these qualifications to this specific employer? how well the
writer considers her/his specific audience? how well the writer considers
the specific position being applied for? (for further details see assignment
criteria).
- Write a memo
addressed to the writer (and cc: the instructor) in which you provide
feedback on the writer's resume and cover letter. Remember to write
a detailed memo that refers to specific text in the writer's documents.
You will need to choose how you want to organize this memo with headings.
- By the end of
class, print two copies of this memo and give both copies to the writer.
- As the writer,
staple the following documents together in the following order (your
resume, your cover letter, the memo about your documents) and submit
them to the instructor.
