Research Strategies

[syllabus] [calendar]

The purpose of this activity is to analyze research strategies that you and your peers can use for developing an overall research methodology for the MSP. Also you will be developing guides that you and your peers can use to design your data collection strategies.

Before Class

In PWOnline read about interviews (especially one-to-one interviews and crafting questions),
questionnaires, and observations. Also read about Usability Testing (Instone, Usability.gov, and Storyboard)

During Class

Open a MS Word document, and collaboratively write a memo that focuses on the research method assigned to your group.

Group Leader Method
Christina Questionnaires/Surveys
Asad Interviews
Aida Observations
Roy Usability Testing

Write a memo to your peers in this class. Keeping this audience in mind, use the following questions to develop a guide that your peers can use to design research strategies for the MSP. When addressing these questions be descriptive and exhaustive.

  • what does one do when one is using this method to collect data?
  • for what circumstances and contexts would a researcher use this method to collect data?
  • what are some of the obstacles of using this research method? (also consider ethical concerns)
  • provide some very specific examples about how you might use this research method in your research process. Describe how you will set the data collection up and provide a few samples of your research tool.

At the end of class, save the document and send it to the class as an MS Word Attachment.
