Joining the Conversation

Purpose

In today's class you will have the opportunity to start thinking about the connections between the readings that you did for your project.

Activity I: Understanding the conversation

In the groups you will be assigned to look through the five articles that read for this class (Haas, DePew, Weitz, Wysocki, Troutman). Ultimately you and your group will want to think about how these five articles might be used to set up the study for a single project.

  • What might that project be? What might the research question being asked be? <There is no right answer>
  • For each article create a list of tags or keywords.
  • Based upon these tags, what is each group saying about the question you are trying to answer?
  • Which authors are agreeing with each other? Which ones disagree?
  • Based upon this sample of articles, what would you say the field of writing studies thinks about this subject matter?

After twenty minutes we will discuss your responses to these questions.

Activity II: Understanding your own conversation

You will have the rest of the class to use the same strategies to think about how you might organize your sources for the literature review.
