Library Research

Purpose

To learn about the Old Dominion Perry Library you will be asked to find some material to demonstrate that you understand how to search the library. This activity is designed to give you some skills for finding materials you will need for this course. Likewise, you can extrapolate from this activity to figure out how to find materials in your own major.

Activity

As an individual, you will locate the material that you are assigned to find (See table below). There is one journal article, one book chapter, and one government document on a college-related issue that affects the teaching of writing.

It is recommended that you start online to locate these items. Some of them you can find completely online. Others you will have to enter the Perry Library website to access. But all of you will need to go to the physical Perry Library building to locate some of these items. Note that if you cannot find any of these items, go to the Perry Library and ask a reference librarian. If asking the librarian is not fruitful, contact the instructor.

After you have located the items, you will be composing a blog entry. In this blog you will need to...

  • prove that you have found it by taking a picture of the document's first page. You can do this with a screen shot on your computer or by taking a picture with your phone of the computer screen or the physical object. Post the picture to your blog.
  • Write a 300-500 word description of the process you went through to find each item. You can compose this like a narrative (story-like) or as instructions you would give someone else. Include the obstacles you experienced and how you overcame the obstacles.

Post the blog and send the instructor the URL (or web address) of the blog web site no later than the end of the day on Wednesday, October 9, 2013. This activity will be accessed using the criteria from the blog assignment.
