Finding & Using Online Sources

Purpose

During today's lesson the instructor will help you to understand the rules for some common grammatical errors so that you can be more aware of them in the future. Also you will have an opportuity to start looking for online resources about your topic.

Lecture I: Common Grammar Errors

The instructor will give a lesson on two common grammar errors: 1) how to punctuate dependent and independent clauses and 2) where to place punctuation at the end of a quotation.

You will then have an opportuity to practice identifying and revising these errors.

  • Open up an email addressed to the instructor (kdepew@odu.edu)
  • In the Proposal assignment, look through the paper you wrote and find a sentence in which you correctly use the rules for dependent and independent clauses. Using the rules you were just taught (as well as those from the Purdue OWL), explain why you puntuated the sentence correctly.
  • Likewise, find a sentence in which you incorrectly use the rules for dependent and independent clauses. Using the rules you were just taught (as well as those from the Purdue OWL), edit the sentence to correct it, and then explain why you puntuated the sentence correctly.

Workshop I: Looking It Up

After the instructor fields questions about the Research Blogs, you will have the balance of the class to work on finding sources that you can use for these blog entries. If you have already chosen sources, you can either begin reading them or writing your first entry.
