Writing a Rhetorical Reflection

Purpose

One of the final documents you have to submit this semester is a Rhetorical Reflection. In this document, you will want to explain the decisions you have made to influence your audience. In today's class the instructor will provide some strategies for writing the rhetorical reflection.

Freewrite: What you have learmned

Look over the comments the instructor wrote on your IMRAD essay. Also think about what you have learned about writing that you had not previously known.

Compose an email draft addressed to yourself and the instructor. For ten minutes you will compose this this email to address the following:

  • What have you learned about writing in this course?
  • Create a list of items that you will need to remember to address in your writing for the next major writing experience you have (e.g., 200-level writing course, "W" course, workplace writing)

Note that this is an email draft; therefore, you will not be sending it to anyone immediately. Instead wait to send this email until after your grade has been submitted for this class. This way the email cannot be used to influence your grade. And you can use this email as a guideline when you take your 200-level writing course or you take a "W" course in your major.

Discussion: Debriefing on the IMRAD essays

The instructor will talk about the following topics in relation to the IMRAD essay:

  • Writing in the past tense
  • Being detailed with your methodology
  • Reporting your results
