Visual Rhetoric

Purpose

In today's class you will be asked to think about how we communicate using visuals. We will talk about both how we format a document and how we can work with images to create a desired effect?

Activity I: Getting to Know Anne

You will be assigned to a group. Look at the two ways that Anne Wysocki is represented on the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee web site.

Open up a Google Document and share it with your group members and the instructor (kdepew@odu.edu). Looking at her chapter you read, answer the following questions:

  • What is Wysocki's argument?
  • How does she support her argument?
  • What do you think of her argument? What do you think of the way that she presented her chapter?
  • What questions do you have about this chapter?

Looking at her web sites, answer the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of each site? Who is the target audience of each?
  • How are these sites visually different? How are they the same?
  • In what ways do you see her practicing what she preaches? How is she using ethos, pathos and logos?
  • Which do you prefer and why?
  • After 30 minutes we will discuss your responses to these questions.

Exit Ticket: Visualizing Your Own Topic

  • To leave the class early, you will need to complete the following activity individually:
  • Open an email to the instructor (kdepew@odu.edu)
  • Choose a keyword related to the topic you are studying and use the keyword to do a image search.
  • Skim through the results and choose an image that you would use for your IMRAD or your Research Remix; upload the image into your email.
  • Answer the following questions in the body of the email:
    • Which assignment would you use this for–IMRAD and/or Research Remix?
    • Why did you choose this image? What effect are you hoping to have on your audience, in terms of ethos, pathos, and/or logos?
    • How might you edit this image to create this desired effect?

When you are done answering these questions, call the instructor or his assistant over and talk about your answer, if this person is satisfied with your answers you may leave the class early.
