Purpose

Today you will be introduced to the course and learn about the different fields that inform the second language (L2) writing scholarship.

FreeWrite and Discussion I

What courses do you teach or do you want to teach? What are your goals for those courses? How does linguistic diversity fit into these goals?

Introductions

Discussion II: Composition, Education, and Linguistics

You all will be divided into four groups based upon your major and/or emphasis. In these groups you will have 30 minutes to compose a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation. Because L2 writing draws upon these disciplines, think about this presentation as a way to help your peers understand this field better, especially how you will be approaching the course. This presentation, at the very least, should entail...

  • What are the basic principles of your field? What do scholars in this field want to learn about? What do they study? What do most of the scholars in the field believe about this subject (What principles do all members of the field agree upon)?
  • What are some of the major debates in the field?
  • What are the primary ways your field does research (or develops knowledge)? Think about the scholarship you have read in other classes for this field.
  • What does your field say about second language (L2) L2 writing?

Each group will have 10 minutes to present and each person should have a speaking role.
