POLS 414 - Politics of Education

COURSE DESCRIPTION

     This seminar focuses on the politics of the American system of education. Particular attention is given to how the exercise of power is manifested and shapes the thrust and trajectory of the American education enterprise. Special attention is given to such topics as political socialization, the effects of diversity and multiculturalism, and the role and effects of educational policy, including higher education at the federal level. This course utilizes a hybrid format encompassing both traditional and on-line teaching methods. Critical thinking, analytic skills, and the development of writing skills are emphasized through the mastery of theory and the required written assignments in the course. Students must participate in all assigned activities for the duration of the semester, including a major team project which involves outside research and a class presentation. Basic strategies of instruction include assigned readings, lecture-discussion, and group activities. Blackboard (Bb) course software is used extensively and is accessible via the University's web page. Upon successful completion of the course, students will have the necessary intellectual and analytic tools to assess the relationship between the nation's system of education and its social and political development. In addition, students will have the requisite theoretical background and awareness of policy issues to formulate effective research questions and timely solutions to enhance the United States' system of education.
