Special Events

Below are special events that will allow you to obtain extra credit for the class that will be applied to your final grade.  The guidelines are as follows:  a) attend the event, b) obtain a chit (ticket) that confirms that you attended the event, c) submit a typed, 2 page summary of the event (name of the event, names of participants in the event, description of the event, what you learned from the event and d) attach the chit to the paper.  Each event that you attend is worth 5 points.  You can attend up to three events during the semester.  The paper must be submitted to the instructor no later than one week after the event or it will not be accepted.  In other words, submit it to the instructor in class or submit it to the department secretary (BAL 7000) who will put the date on the paper and pass it on to the instructor.  Events will be added by your instructor or you can suggest an event subject to your instructor's approval or rejection.

SEPTEMBER

September 17- - "Burn the Books:  The Fight for Free Expression."  Constitution and Citizenship Day and Banned Books Week.  Keynote Speaker and Panel Discussion.  Location:  1310 and 1311, Learning Commons, Perry Library.  Reception in front of the Learning Commons at 6:30 pm.

September 23 - - "Documented: A Film by an Undocumented American."  Constitution and Citizenship Day and Hispanic Heritage Month.  Film screening and discussion.  Location:  BAL 1012.  Time: 7:10 pm.

OCTOBER 

NOVEMBER

November 4 - - President's Lecture Series:  Wes Moore, youth advocate, best-selling author and social entrepreneur is committed to helping young people redirect their lives.  He is founder and CEO of Bridge EdU that addresses completion and career placement.  Location:  Ted Constant Convocation Center.  Time:  7:30 pm.

November 5 - - "Reflections on the 2014 Midterm Elections."  Panel discussion with ODU professors, Dr. Simon Serfaty, Dr. Jesse Richman, Dr. Tom Chapman, Dr. Kimberly Karnes and Dr. Shenita Brazelton.  The panelists will discuss the implications of the election with a focus on the new composition of the Congress, international relations, gay marriage, state politics, and race and the election.  Moderator: Dr. Glen Sussman.  Location:  BAL 9024.  Time:  3-4:15 pm.
