Brief Curriculum Vitae

Oktay Baysal serves as the Dean of Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University. His academic rank is Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. BCET is organized into six departments, two divisions, two centers and eight institutes. It has around 150 full-time employees, including 105 teaching faculty and 10 endowed chairs or named professorships. Of over 3,200 students about 25% are in graduate programs. BCET offers 9 bachelor's, 10 master's, and 7 Doctoral programs. In FY 2011, the total expenditure of BCET exceeded $40M of which 65% was resourced by the sponsored programs. BCET's endowment exceeded $26M.

Dr. Baysal's research interests are in the areas of computational fluid dynamics, design optimization and sensitivity analysis, micro-fluidic transport in micro-electro-mechanical systems, unsteady aerodynamics, and computational aeroacoustics. Dr. Baysal has authored or co-authored over one hundred and fifty full-length technical publications, and edited or co-edited ten technical books. His research and educational programs have been extensively sponsored by various funding agencies and the industry. He has served as the research director and dissertation or thesis adviser for thirty-eight doctoral students, master's students and post-doctoral fellows. During his career, he has taught more than twenty different courses, at the graduate and the undergraduate levels, in the areas of aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, and engineering mechanics. Some of these courses were developed and delivered in distance learning formats.

In 1993, he was awarded the NASA Public Service Medal. He also received three NASA Certificates of Recognition in 1992, 1993 and 2009, respectively. Since 1996, he has the distinction of being designated as an Eminent Scholar at Old Dominion University for his consistent research contributions. NAMTAC has honored (1999) one of Dr. Baysal's research projects with the Outstanding Project of the Year Award for Technology Transfer.

He has been elected as Fellow of ASME (1996), Associate Fellow of AIAA (1994), charter member of EpsilonMuEta Engineering Management Honor Society, member of TauBetaPi Engineering Honor Society, member of PhiKappaPhi National Honor Society, and member of PhiEtaSigma National Honor Society. As a registered professional engineer, Dr. Baysal has been a consultant to various industries.

He has served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Fluids Engineering, Guest Editor of Journal of Aerospace Engineering, and has organized or co-organized thirty national/international symposia and forums. He is a member of AIAA, ASME, ASEE, NSPE, SAE, SIAM, VSPE, USRA and USACM, and served on several national committees in these societies (ASEE Engineering Deans Council, ASEE Engineering Research Council, ASME Fluid Mechanics, ASME Computational Fluid Dynamics, AIAA Aeroacoustics, and AIAA Multidisciplinary Design Optimization).

He served his community as a Board Member of Virginia Board of Education, Virginia Air and Space Center, Technology Hampton Roads, Virginia Microelectronics Consortium, NASA Aerospace Support Team, STEM Task Force of Greater Norfolk Corporation, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, and ODU Research Foundation.
