LABORTORY SYLLABUS - Summer Semester, 2010

LABORTORY TIME & PLACE: Recitation will be held during the 1st hour of your 3-hour recitation/lab session. Recitations are held in either Rm 105 or 106, Alfriend Chemistry Bldg. Following recitation, your laboratory will be held in either Rm 310 or 311, Alfriend Chemistry Bldg. Please check your schedule for the room number and time of the recitation/laboratory section for which you have registered.

Instructors:  TBA.  As soon as we have a list of the CHEM 115N lab instructors, we will post their names and contact  information.

COREQUISITE : Students taking CHEM 115N, Foundations of Chemistry I, must be registered for a lecture, laboratory/recitation section.

MATERIALS: You will need a copy of the laboratory manual:  Postma JM, Roberts JL Jr, and Hollenberg JL,  "Chemistry in the Laboratory, 6th ed. " This lab manual will be used for both semesters. Pre-labs to accompany each experiment and supplemental handouts will be posted in the Course Documents section of Blackboard. It is the responsibility of the student to access and print out each handout before each lab period. In addition you must have safety goggles. Lab coats are optional. All these materials are available in the ODU bookstore in Webb Center.

DRESS CODE: You must wear goggles at all times while in the laboratory - you will be asked to leave lab if you do not wear your goggles! In addition, you must wear shoes - no "flip-flops"; and loose, flowing hair must be tied back or in a hair net. No shorts! Shirts are required - your shoulders must be covered, so bring a shirt if you are wearing a "tube top" or a "spaghetti strap" top. Lab coats are recommended, but optional.

LABORATORY SAFETY: You will receive instruction in general laboratory safety and receive a list of general lab safety rules during the orientation given in the first week in lab. You can expect a quiz over this material the following week's lab. In addition, at the beginning of every lab you will be given instruction in safe handling of chemicals and equipment which is specific to experiment being performed. Failure to follow general lab safety rules, or if you handle chemicals in an unsafe manner will result in your being asked to leave the lab and receiving a zero for that day's lab.

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance is required. You must be on time. Make-up labs are not available. In order to accommodate unavoidable absences due to your illness or a death in your immediate family, the lowest grade for one laboratory period will be dropped. A zero grade will be assigned for additional absences. Reports will not be accepted for lab periods that you have not attended!

GRADING: The grade for the laboratory portion of Chemistry 115N will be determined as follows: Recitation, 20%; Lab Reports, 70%; and Instructor's Evaluation, 10%.

Note: Late lab reports will incur a 50% penalty (100% becomes a 50%!!). A lab report will be considered late if it is turned in after lab reports are collected by the lab instructor. No credit will be given for lab reports turned in more than one lab period late.

The instructor's evaluation will be based on promptness, attention to instructions, preparation for and understanding of procedure, observation of safety precautions, good housekeeping, care to minimize breakage, and cooperation.

There will be no laboratory final exam. A portion of your lecture final exam will be devoted to testing your understanding of the laboratory material.

Your laboratory grade will count as 20% of your CHEM 115N course grade. A minimum grade of 50% in laboratory is required to pass CHEM 115N.

LAB REPORTS:

Prior to coming to lab:

1.  Each student must prepare a statement of objectives of the experiment to be performed that day as well as an outline of the methods to be used to reach those objectives.  This statement, which need not exceed one page, must be typed or computer printed and will be checked and initialed by the lab instructor before the experiment is begun.

2.  Pre-lab questions must also be completed before the beginning of the experiment.  Pre-lab questions should be downloaded from the Laboratory Folder located in the Course Documents section of Blackboard..

After the laboratory experiment is completed, the data sheet will be checked by your lab instructor and initialed before you leave the lab. The completed reports are due on the Friday of the week of the week in which the labs were done, except for the last experiment which is due on June 24th.
