CHEM 116N, Foundations of Chemistry II

LABORATORY COURSE POLICY - Spring, 2010

Laboratory Time & Place:   All laboratories begin with a recitation session.  Immediately following recitation, the laboratory is held in either Rm 310 or 311, Alfriend Chemistry Bldg. Please check your schedule for the time and room number of the recitation/laboratory section for which you have registered.

Laboratory Instructors: TBA

Manuals & Materials:  You will need a copy of the laboratory manual:  Postma JM, Roberts JL Jr, and Hollenberg JL,  "Chemistry in the Laboratory, 6th ed. " This lab manual was also used for CHEM 115N. Pre-labs to accompany each experiment and supplemental handouts will be posted on your Laboratory Blackboard Site and in the Course Documents section of your CHEM 116N Lecture Blackboard site. It is the responsibility of the student to access and print out each handout before each lab period. In addition you must have safety goggles with side shields.

Corequisite: Students taking CHEM 116N must be registered for both lecture and laboratory.

Dress Code: Safety goggles must be worn in the laboratory at all times. In addition, you must wear shoes - no "flip-flops"; and loose, flowing hair must be tied back or in a hair net. No shorts! Shirts required - your shoulders must be covered, so bring a shirt if you are wearing a "tube top" or a "spaghetti strap" top. Lab coats are recommended, but optional.

Lab Safety: You will receive instruction in general laboratory safety and receive a list of general lab safety rules during the orientation given in the first week in lab. In addition, at the beginning of every lab you will be given instruction in safe handling of chemicals and equipment which is specific to experiment being performed. Failure to follow general lab safety rules and/or handling chemicals in an unsafe manner will result in your being asked to leave the lab and receiving a zero for that day's lab.

Attendance: Regular attendance is mandatory. You must be on time. Make-up labs are not available. In order to accommodate unavoidable absences due to illness or other emergency, the lowest lab report grade will be dropped. A zero grade will be assigned for additional absences. Reports will not be accepted for lab periods which you did not attend.

Grading: The grade for the laboratory portion of CHEM 116N will be determined as follows: Laboratory reports will be worth 70%, recitation quizzes will be worth 20%, and your Instructor's evaluation will be worth 10%. Late lab reports will incur a 50% penalty. A lab report will be considered late if it is turned in after the lab reports are collected by the lab instructor. The instructor's evaluation will be based on promptness, attention to instructions, preparation for and understanding of procedure, observation of safety precautions, good housekeeping, care to minimize breakage, and cooperation. There will be no laboratory final.

Your laboratory grade will count as 20% of your CHEM 116N course grade. A minimum laboratory grade of 50% is required in order to pass CHEM 116N.

Lab Reports: Before you come to lab, you are required to prepare a statement of the objectives of the experiment being done that period and an outline of the methods to be used in the lab experiment. This Pre-Lab outline & statement should not exceed one page and must be typed. If you fail to bring the Pre-lab outline and statement to lab, you will have points deducted from your lab report grade! Your lab instructor will check your statement before you begin the experiment. In addition, after the experiment has been completed your instructor will check your data sheet & initial it before you leave. The completed lab report will include a statement of the objectives & outline of the experimental methods used (this is the Pre-Lab statement & outline), data & answers to the questions (Report Sheet).  Lab reports are due at the beginning of the next lab period that you are scheduled to attend.

Honor Code: The Old Dominion University Honor Code also applies to laboratory work. All work for credit is to be your own work. This means that while you and your lab partner have obtained the same data in lab, your prelab outline, prelab questions, calculations, and answers to lab questions should be done individually.  Any kind of academic dishonesty or deception such as cheating or plagiarism is a violation of the Honor Code.
