Optional: To help you prepare for the comprehensive final exam, the ACS-ODU Student Affiliate Chapter offers the ACS Exam Study Guide. This guide has sample questions similar to those that are on the final exam. A pdf file containing ordering instructions and form is available on the class Blackboard site.  Copies of this study guide are also available at the Reserve Desk in the ODU library.

Check the CHEM 116N Lab Schedule & Policy for a list of the materials needed for laboratory.

Course Information & Prerequisites:

CHEM 116N is a 4-credit lecture and laboratory course intended for science majors. CHEM 117 is a 3-credit lecture course intended for engineering majors. Chemistry 116N students must be registered for both lecture & laboratory. Prerequisite: Math 102 & a grade of C or higher in CHEM 115N or equivalent.

Blackboard:

You are responsible for checking the course Blackboard site for current announcements and information.  Your grades will be posted on the CHEM 116N/117 Blackboard site. We will use blackboard to communicate with you - and you MUST activate your university e-mail account to be added to the Blackboard class roster. If you are having trouble activating your email account, please contact OCCS at occshelp@odu.edu or call 683-3192.

Homework & Computer Assignments:

You must have a computer account or access to the internet in order to do your homework (which counts for 12% of your grade). If you don't currently have an account, you may obtain a student account at any computer lab or at the computer center in Webb Center (across from Starbucks) or online at http://www.odu.edu/af/occs/stu_accounts.html . Sample problems, similar to those assigned for the course homework, can be found in the end of chapter exercises in your textbook.  Try these first and once you can work them successfully, go to the Mastering Chemistry internet site, login and do the assigned homework problems.

You will have multiple attempts to correctly answer the assigned problems. Mastering Chemistry will grade your problems & give you your score immediately. If you want to improve this score you can redo the problems which were incorrect, and resubmit. There will be approximately 25-30 problems assigned per chapter.

Please see your assignment on Mastering Chemistry for the due date & time for each unit homework set.  Homework may not be submitted after the due date unless a valid, documented excuse is presented to the instructor.

Attendance and Class Conduct:

Attendance is important; and those who don't attend will lose up to 3 class participation points from your course grade.   The lecture notes are posted on Blackboard - these notes represent what was covered in class but do not include all of the material discussed in class. When possible, class videos will also be posted.  You are responsible for the material covered in class even if you do not attend.  For those taking CHEM 116N, attendance will also be taken in recitation and laboratory - you will receive a "0" for the quizzes or labs missed if you do not have an excused absence. YOU MUST RECEIVE A LABORATORY GRADE OF 50% OR HIGHER TO PASS CHEM 116N!

Cell phones must be turned off in MGB 102 during class. No i-pods in class. Disruptive students will be asked to leave. Please consult the ODU "Classroom Behavior Standards" for a full description of the University policy.  This is a large lecture class - please respect the students seated around you by not disturbing them with loud conversations.

Exams:

There will be four unit exams covering the material indicated in Lecture Schedule.  Please bring the following items to every exam:

1.   a non-programmable calculator to every exam - Back-up calculators are not available so please be sure that your calculator is working prior to coming to the exam (suggestion - bring a back-up battery).

2.  Your ODU Student ID card (with a clear picture) and time registration receipt  in order to take the Unit Exams, so please remember to bring these items. Failure to bring your ID will mean that you cannot take the exam (this is not a valid excuse for a make-up exam).

3.  A blue Opscan (scantron) answer sheet formatted for 100 item, 5-answer multiple choice questions.  These are available in the bookstore.

4. Two sharpened, No. 2 pencils for coding in multiple choice answers.

The answer on the Opscan sheet is your final answer and will take precedence over the multiple choice answer written on the test.

You may not have cell phones, Personal Digital Assistants, or any other electronic devices (other than a non-programmable calculator) during the exams.

Unit Exams will be administered in the Learning Assessment Lab , Rm 101 Gornto.  Before you can take your exam, you must make an appointment to take it.  Normally, you can make your appointment a week in advance of the exam.  You will not be able to schedule an exam appointment after 5 pm on the day BEFORE your exam.  Instructions for registering for an exam at the Learning Assessment Lab are posted on the Blackboard Course Information page.

Please register several days prior to the exam.  You are responsible for making sure that you have the time available to take your exam BEFORE you register. No online registrations are permitted after 5 pm on the day before the exam.  If you fail to register to take the exam, you will be able take your exam only if space is available and on a "first come, first serve" basis.  Failure to register for an exam, or missing an exam without a valid excuse means that you may receive a zero for the exam.  See make-up exams below.

In order to take your exam, you must arrive at the Learning Assessment Lab at the time listed on your exam registration receipt. If you are late, it is likely that you will not be able to take your exam.   Please refer to the lecture schedule table for the dates of the Unit exams.

The comprehensive Final Exam will be given in Rm 102, MGB.  Please refer to the lecture schedule for the date and time of the final exam.

Make-Up Exams:

Make-up exams will be given only when you have a documented emergency (illness or accident, death in the family, etc.). Should an emergency arise, you must notify your instructor (preferably by e-mail) BEFORE the test. If you notify the instructor after the test, then giving a make-up exam will be at the instructor's discretion. In the case of illness, you must bring a written statement from your physician stating that you were too sick to take the exam. Proof of involvement in an automobile accident (accident report) or death in the family will also be required. This must be done BEFORE a makeup exam will be given. Missing a scheduled appointment to take your exam is not a valid excuse to take a make-up exam.

Honor Code :

Students registered for CHEM 116N/117 are expected to adhere to the Old Dominion University Honor Code. ALL work for credit must be YOUR WORK ALONE. For further information on the University Honor Code, please consult your ODU Student Handbook,

http://studentaffairs.odu.edu/handbooks/images/studenthandbook.pdf

under Student Disciplinary Policies and Procedures.

Grading :

For students taking CHEM 116N: your class grade will be based on your performance on the average of your four unit exam scores (45%), your comprehensive final exam score (20%), your average score for your homework (12%), your class participation (3%), and your laboratory grade (20%).

Your CHEM 116N grade = (0.45 * unit exam average) + (0.20 * your lab average) + (0.12 * your unit homework average) + (0.20 * your final exam average) + up to 3 class participation points

For students taking CHEM 117: your class grade will be based on your performance on your four unit exam scores (55%), your comprehensive final exam score (25%), your average score for your homework (17%), and your class participation points (3%).

Your CHEM 117 grade = (0.55 * unit exam average) +  (0.17 * your unit homework average) + (0.25 * your final exam average) + up to 3 class participation points

During each class period I'll ask some questions pertaining to the topic being covered in lecture.  If you answer 70% of these questions correctly, you will have 3 pts added to your CHEM 116N or 117 class average:

Class participation pts earned = [(pts earned up to 0.70 x total pts)/(0.7 x total pts)] x 3

Your course letter grade will be assigned as shown below:
