COUN 835 – Advanced Counseling Research and Program Evaluation

Course Purpose:

This doctoral-level course examines advanced topics and controversies in qualitative and quantitative counseling research; this integration of theoretical with applied counseling material will augment the Department’s standard doctoral research offerings. Additionally, counseling assessment models, methods and the application of assessment data will be discussed.

 

Learning Objectives/ Course Goals:

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

 

  • Articulate their research question(s) for the dissertation proposal.
  • Familiarize themselves with the ODU Guide for Preparation of Theses and Dissertations as well as program-specific procedures.
  • Outline a detailed plan (Method section, including data collection/analysis timeline) of how they are going to conduct a dissertation study.
  • Discuss how dissertation data will be analyzed.
  • Distinguish and analyze counseling assessment models and methods.
  • Articulate the appropriate use of assessment data in program evaluation and research design in general.
  • Define program evaluation.
  • Discuss the purposes of various types of program evaluation.
  • Design an evaluation study.
  • Critique the design, implementation, and findings of an evaluation.
  • Understand advanced research topics such as conducting a Delphi study, factor analysis, survey development, meta-analysis, and discriminant function analysis.
