Cummin
Cummin, Cuminum cymimum, a relative of dill, is also an annual plant grown for the seeds (technically the fruits, each "seed" is a schizocarp) that are used to flavor bread and pastries. It is mentioned three times in Isaiah 28 (verses 25, 27, and 28). The best known reference is in Matthew 23:23 (Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.) The seeds are still often threshed by beating them with a stick as recorded in Isaiah 28:28.
