Gum Resin, Mastic

Mastic gum

The precise identity of the gum resin used in the compounding of the incense is not known but is likely from Pistacia lentiscus known as mastic and readily available in many large Arab markets. It is still widely used in the Middle East in a variety of medicinal and fragrance applications including the compounding of incense. The gum is sold as a yellowish, clear resin.
