Onion

The scientific name of the onion is Allium cepa, closely related to garlic, leeks, and chives. Like many plants in the Mediterranean communities, onion has a storage bulb and loses its leaves during the dry season. The onion bulb is composed of overlapping leaf scales. Onions are mentioned in the Bible only in Numbers 11:5 but are an essential component of Middle East cooking.
