Developmental and Instructional Strategies for PK-6 Social Studies

Course description: 3 hours, 3 credits. This course provides experiences examining and designing instructional strategies and materials for teaching social studies in the elementary grades. The course emphasizes constructivist approaches to social studies instruction.

Purpose: In this course, teacher candidates will begin to formulate their identities as teachers of children.  This course challenges them to consider the philosophical as well as the practical aims of social studies curriculum.  In particular, it focuses on teaching social studies in the early grades in a thoughtful and authentic manner.
