Heart Attacks
Limit tisuse loss with drugs that promote regeneration
Myocardial infarction, also known as
a "heart attack", is the death of heart
tissue that occurs when a blood
vessel in the heart gets blocked and
the oxygen supply is interrupted.
Patients who survive myocardial
infarction face the additional risk of
developing congestive heart failure
because there is so much
compromised tissue.
In ODU's Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab, we are testing several new drugs that are designed to limit the death of tissue following a heart attack. Such drugs have the potential to reduce the risk of heart failure following myocardial infarction.
