CASES AND EXERCISES

The cases and exercises are a very important element of this course. Each

case will be discussed during a class session. Each student will

then submit a summary of the case to the instructor by the due date specified after the discussion.

This summary can only be one page long. The reason I limit you to one page

is that I want you to have to choose the best words to express your

thoughts. If you cannot do this on one page you will not be successful in

      internal auditing writing tasks.

The one page summary should contain the following sections: Facts

(approximately 1/8of the page), Issues (approximately 3/4 of the page),

and Recommendations (approximately 1/8 of the page).

The Facts section should be a concise statement summarizing the situation

contained in the case. The Issues section should list and discuss the

important issues raised by the class discussion of the case. The

Recommendations section should contain the student's decisions regarding

each issue raised in the Issues section.

One-inch margins should be observed. Use 12 point Times New Roman or

      Courier Font, single spaced.

Dr. Ziegenfuss's writing tips (with assistance from George Orwell and E.B. White):

      1. Organization and appearance are everything.

      2. One thought per sentence.

      3. Use short paragraphs.

      4. Use headings and subheadings to break up long paragraphs.

      5. Use the active voice.

      6. Substitute shorter words for longer words.

      7. Watch the use of modifiers. Be specific.

      8. Do not use verbs as nouns and nouns as verbs.

There are three ways of fulfilling the research project assignment:

      1. Complete a traditional term paper on any subject dealing with internal

      auditing.

      2. Develop a case study on any subject dealing with internal auditing (see

      course pac for additional information).

      3. Complete the fraud research project (see course pac for additional

      information).

Graduate students should get prior approval of their projects before

completing significant work on them. This will prevent serious

      understandings from occurring.

THE ETHICS PROJECT

      PURPOSE:

Master and apply appropriate ethical values as listed in the IIA Codes of

      Ethics.

      PROCEDURES:

      1. Read the IIA Codes of Ethics.

      2. Form a group with two or three fellow students.

      3. Identify a situation involving ethical decision making.

      4. Write a script describing the situation.

      5. Act out the situation on video tape or DVD (no longer than 10 minutes).

      6. Discuss the situation in class.

GRADING: Based on clarity of writing and presentation, and analysis of

      results.
