PREREQUISITE COURSES

This course is designed only  for graduate students. You must be enrolled in a graduate program at Old Dominion University. The only prerequisite course is Accounting 601 or equivalent.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Standards, ethics, and practice of operational auditing particularly as it concerns the internal auditing profession, as well as exposure to financial auditing.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to prepare you to be a professional internal auditor. To accomplish this objective I will be presenting technical information as well as evaluating your analytical and communication skills. These are the essential elements for a successful career in internal auditing and indeed in the business/professional world. The successful completion of this objective will also assist you in passing the CIA exam (although this is a secondary course objective).

LEARNING GOALS

Specific learning goals for the course include:

1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the purpose and services offered by professional organizations affecting the internal auditing profession.

2. Students will demonstrate an ability to analyze real world situations and apply professional standards.

3. Students will demonstrate the ability to successfully address issues in establishing an internal auditing organization.

4. Students will demonstrate the ability to successfully address issues in managing an internal auditing organization.

5. Students will demonstrate an ability to successfully address issues in conducting an internal auditing assignment.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS

The course consists of modules designed to allow the student the maximum amount of flexibility.

Each module consists of a web site containing written notes (in lieu of lectures) pertaining to assigned readings in the textbook. The written notes are designed to guide the student through the sometimes rather extensive textbook readings.

ACCOUNTING DEGREE PROGRAMS AT OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY

The Department of Accounting at Old Dominion University currently offers

the following degree programs:

 

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration - Accounting (BSBA), and

The Master of Science in Accounting (MSA).

The BSBA degree program prepares students for entry or staff level accounting positions. It is not designed to prepare students for professional careers.

 

The graduate degree programs prepare students for professional or corporate positions. The MSA is in the accounting field, yet the program can be tailored to a career in public accounting or private industry.

AUDITING (ASSURANCE SERVICES) COURSES AT OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY

 

      These are the auditing courses currently offered by the Department of

      Accounting:

 

      Accounting 411/511 - Financial Auditing (Fall, Spring, Summer) 

      Accounting 623 - Operational Assurance Services (Summer)

      Acct/IT 624 - Information Technology Assurance Services (Summer)

      Accounting 625 - Fraud Examination and Forensic Accounting, (Fall)

      Accounting 631 - Advanced Financial Auditing (Spring)

 

      Accounting 411 - Financial Auditing is the only undergraduate auditing

      course that students majoring in accounting can take. 

 

      Accounting 623 - Operational Assurance Services - deals with the internal

      auditing profession.

 

      Acct/IT 624 - Information Technology Assurance Services - deals with

      controls and auditing of information technology.

 

      Accounting 625 - Fraud Examination and Forensic Accounting - deals with

      the prevention, and detection of fraud and the recovery of assets lost to

      fraud.

 

      Accounting 631 - Advanced Financial Auditing covers advanced financial auditing

      topics concerning both public accounting and internal auditing.

 

INTERNAL AUDITING ENDORSED PROGRAM

 

      The four graduate auditing classes constitutes ODU's Internal

      Auditing Endorsed Program (IAEP). IAEP's are recognized by the Institute of

      Internal Auditors as center of excellence in internal auditing education.

      Upon completion of Acct 623 and any two of the remaining graduate auditing classes  (Acct 625, Acct 631, or Acct/IT 624), students may request from

      Dr. Douglas Ziegenfuss, the IAEP Coordinator, a certificate indicating

      that they have successfully completed the IAEP. Students may then use the

      certificate when interviewing for Internal Auditing jobs.

 

      STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

 

      The Department of Accounting prides itself on the three student

      organizations it sponsors. The oldest is Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), the

      national accounting honor fraternity.

 

      Students wishing to join this prestigious organization must have a minimum

      GPA of 3.0 both overall and in accounting.

 

      BAP is for those students interested in careers in public accounting.

      The Managerial Auditing and Accounting Club (MAAC) is the student chapter

      for the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), Association of Certified Fraud Examiners       (ACFE), and the Association of Government Accountants (AGA).

 

      MAAC is for all accounting students interested in networking with

      professionals. There is no minimum GPA to join MAAC. Additional
