COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Satisfactory completion of 70 hours field observation, consisting of observation in 3 separate classroom settings. 20 of those hours will be completed at the ODU Child Development and/or Child Study Centers. The remaining 50 hours will be split between two different public school classroom settings. Submission of signed time sheet will provide documentation of participation. Note: Do not begin your practicum hours until you have received notification from ODU that your placement has been approved.
  2. Active participation in required seminars. See tentative course schedule.
  3. Completion of a reflective journal noting observations of the classroom. Journal entries must be submitted for every classroom visit/observation. Journals are to be submitted weekly. Please see handout for submission guidelines and rubric. (70% of final grade)
  4. Required reading: You can’t say you can’t play by Vivian Paley and I won’t learn from you by Herb Kohl (available in local libraries and from Amazon). Write a two-page summary/reaction (S/R) to the book. Rubric to be provided. (10% & 10% of final grade)
  5. Interview one of your public school teachers and write a two-page reflection.  Rubric to be provided.  (10% of final grade)
  6. Teach a lesson in each of the two public school placements which is evaluated by your cooperating teacher.
