COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Study all assigned readings and be prepared for class discussions. React to readings and respond along with descriptions of practical experience you have had with young children in class and in your journal. You are expected to explore some of the web sites referenced on pages xv-xvi and in the overview to each unit in the Annual Editions text.(Objs. 1-8)
  2. REQUIRED FOR GRADUATE CREDIT:  Read one book from recommended reading list and discuss with other students reading the same book.  Prepare a brief summary of the book. In addition, include a detailed report on how your future students could benefit from this information. Peer review one another’s papers and then rewrite.   Submit a 4-6 page, typed paper on your book along with the peer review you received.  FOR UNDERGRADUATE CREDIT: Pick a book & join in with book club discussions. No paper is required. Objs. 1-8 (25 pts. for Graduate credit.)
  3. Prepare and present in class a stand-alone "poster" report on one of the topics or sub-topics in our text. Try to think of some non-traditional way to share information you have found with the class. Provide a one-page hand out on your topic outlining information that would be useful to teachers of young children. Be prepared to respond to questions about your “poster” report. (Objs. 1 - 8) (25 pts.)
  4. Keep a journal in which you write your response to class readings. Make this journal a tool with which to think. (Objs. 1 - 8)
  5. A mid-term and final examination will be given covering readings, class discussions, speaker presentations, videos, field trips, journal articles, etc. (Objs. 1 - 8) (25 pts.) (15 pts.)
  6. Class attendance and participation is an important part of this class. You will bring articles, items of interest, etc. to class, contribute to class discussion, support others when they are making presentations, provide a critical peer review, etc. . 100% class attendance and regular classroom participation is expected. (Objs. 1 - 8) (10 pts.)
