COURSE OBJECTIVE
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- analyze the value of children's literature, language arts, and social studies in promoting intellectual, language, aesthetic, socio-emotional, and moral development in young children (analysis);
- develop and demonstrate strategies for motivating the interest of young children of all cultures, including children with disabilities and developmental delays, in language, literacy, literature and social studies (synthesis and application);
- develop and demonstrate learning strategies and activities which show an understanding for the way young children learn and which integrate children's literature, language arts, and social studies across the early childhood curriculum and that meet the state and national standards (synthesis and application);
- design and implement a social studies lesson plan which stimulates developmentally appropriate, high-level thinking in young children, which is integrated across the early childhood curriculum, and which takes into account culturally-valued content and the children's home experiences (Application, Synthesis);
- identify reference materials, family & community resources and persons who can support your classroom literature, language arts and social study objections (Knowledge, Comprehension);
- establish positive, collaborative relationships with families by developing ways to share evidence of progress with the parents of the children you teach (Application, Synthesis);
- apply current research and educational technology in early childhood education in the planning and evaluation of activities (Application).
