REQUIREMENTS

  1. Study all assigned readings and be prepared for class discussions. React to the readings in your class journal. Use your class journal and ESSE 493/593 web site as tools for thinking. Check web site at:  http://www.odu.edu/~awakefie (click on ESSE 493/593). (Obj. 1-7)
  2. Review, discuss and critique local school district, Virginia SOLs, national standards and curriculum guidelines for language arts and social studies. Visit web sites at: http://www.ncte.org/ , http://www.socialstudies.org/standards/  and the Virginia State DOE website at:  http://www.pen.k12.va.us  (Obj. 3)
  3. Read Should We Burn Babar? OR Women Who Run with the Wolves.  Summarize and critique any of the first four chapters (BABAR) OR any chapter after the first two (WOLVES). Due the sixth week of class. 20 pts. (Objs. 1 & 2) Graduates choose #3 or #4.
  4. Research a cross-cultural comparison of one fairy tale theme.  Be prepared to present your research findings orally emphasizing the potential benefits of this story to young children. Use Bettelheim reference and the web to start. Check the following web site too http://www.nationalgeographic.com/grimm/. Due the sixth week of class. 20 pts. (Objs. 1 & 5) Graduates choose #3 or #4.
  5. Contribute to the class time-line project.  Using picture books about events in US history, help young children form relationships about time and place by placing the titles in chronological order. An article describing a time-line project in first grade can be found at:  http://www.odu.edu/~awakefie (click on ESSE 493/593, then time-line). Each student will contribute five picture book titles to the class time-line. Due the fourth week of class. (Obj. 1-6)
  6. Collaborate with one or two other students to prepare a DAP plan for integrating children’s literature, language arts and social studies across the early childhood curriculum. Begin with the observation of a child to find what interests s/he may have.  Select a book related to this interest and create your DAP plan from there.  Incorporate portfolio assessment, parent involvement and educational technology, etc. (see the evaluation rubric) in this plan.  Present this plan to the class orally (due the 10th week of class) and submit a written plan (due the 12th week of class) with enough detail for another professional to implement.  The theme projects evaluated “A” will be combined and published by the ODU Monarch Copy Center.  They can be used in ESSE 586 and ESSE 688 and for your professional portfolio.  (Objs. 1 - 7) (30%)
  7. Demonstrate proficiency on mid-term and final examinations.  If you earn a grade of  B+ or better on the mid-term exam, the final exam may be an assignment choice due on the last night of class. 20 pts.  20 pts. (Objs. 1-7)
  8. Class attendance and participation in class discussion and activities is an important part of this class. You will bring examples of children’s picture books, language arts and social studies curriculum activities and experiences for young children to share in class.  You will evaluate and revise your own, as well as classmates’ instructional activities.  Therefore, 100% class attendance and regular participation in class discussion are expected. 10 pts. (Objs. 1-7)
