COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Study all assigned readings and be prepared for class discussions. (Obj. 1-3)

Replicate 5/6 interactive games that encourage math thinking in young children and that support the NCTM Standards and the Virginia SOLs. (Objs. 1-3) (25%)

Design 3/4 original interactive games that encourage math thinking in young children and that support the Virginia SOLs. Each student will present one game to the group on Saturday afternoon. A handout explaining game rules and a copy of game materials (e.g., chance cards, game board, etc.) for the 3/4 games is due in two weeks. Your handout should follow the format used in EARLY CHILDHOOD NUMBER GAMES and address the Virginia SOLs. (Objs. 1-3) (50%)

Class participation includes readings, effort on shared assignments, 100% attendance, active involvement in class work and discussions and support for all presenters. See section on Learner Responsibilities. (Objs. 1-3) (25%)

Bring the following materials to class on Friday, July 19th:

  • Felt marking pens including black
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick (Some people prefer rubber cement but glue pen or Elmers Glue does not work well)
  • 6 File folders of various colors
  • Pack of playing cards
  • Colored construction paper
  • Straight edge or ruler

After class, you will want to buy more specific items, such as:

  • Game pieces that are appropriate for a particular game you've made. For example: novelty erasers, rain forest frogs (Dollar Tree), art foam (WalMart), Creepy Crawler Creatures (Dollar Store), golf ball markers Visit the sports section at Target;
  • Multi-colored Post It notes for ease in spacing steps on your game board;
  • Preschool 1 2 3 Flash Cards available at the Dollar Tree store
  • Decorative glue such as Glitter glue You can get this at Sams store;
  • Baggies to attach game pieces to game for safe keeping;
  • Velcro to make a game board flexible by attaching new graphics or directions;
  • Specific types of dice. For example: Sponge rubber or eraser dice (Big Lots store). 24 assorted dice pkg. Visit the Target store.
  • Computer labels or business card stock to make chance cards
  • Plain or pre-printed yard sale pricing stickers for making money games or changing dice face Visit the KMart store;
  • Protect your game board by laminating it. Visit Copytron across from campus, but call ahead as their machine needs 20 minutes to warm up.
